False Ceiling Guide: Gypsum vs POP, Cost and Lighting

Everything worth knowing before you commit to a false ceiling — gypsum vs POP, how much height you lose, cost, and getting the lighting right.

A false ceiling is really a lighting decision wearing a ceiling's clothes. Done well it hides wiring and ducting, softens a room with cove light and puts task light where you need it. Done as an afterthought it eats head height and dates fast. Here is how to get it right.

## Gypsum vs POP

- **Gypsum board** gives cleaner, straighter lines, installs faster, and makes far less mess on site. It is our default for most homes. - **POP (plaster of Paris)** allows more curved and custom shapes, but is wetter, slower and much messier to work with.

For a typical flat-ceiling design, gypsum wins on finish and speed. POP earns its place only when the design genuinely needs sculpted curves.

## How much height will you lose?

- A **peripheral** false ceiling drops only the border and keeps the centre at full slab height — ideal for standard 10 ft rooms. - A **full** false ceiling typically loses about 4–6 inches everywhere.

If your ceilings are already low, stick to peripheral or a slim cove detail. We always plan around your actual slab height so a room never feels boxed in.

## What it costs

False ceiling is usually priced per square foot — very roughly ₹75–130 per sq ft for a peripheral gypsum ceiling, more for full ceilings or complex coves. Then there is the lighting itself, which varies enormously by fixture choice and is where budgets quietly grow. Always ask for fixtures as separate line items so you can see the running total.

## Get the lighting right, not just the ceiling

Good lighting is layered:

- **Ambient** — soft, even light, often from concealed cove lighting. - **Task** — brighter, directed light where you work: kitchen counter, study, mirror. - **Accent** — profile lights and spots that lift a feature wall or artwork.

Just as important is grouping the circuits sensibly and placing switches where your hand expects them. A room that can shift from bright and functional to warm and low in a tap is worth far more than an extra decorative curve in the plaster.

## Plan it once

Retrofitting lighting later means chasing ceilings and walls again. Planning the ceiling and lighting together — wiring, coves and switch points in one go — is cheaper and cleaner than coming back. We design both as a single layout and show it to you in 3D before anything is built.
