BWR vs BWP vs HDHMR, laminate vs acrylic vs PU - a designer's plain-language guide to kitchen materials that survive Indian cooking.
Kitchen material conversations usually descend into alphabet soup - BWR, BWP, HDHMR, MDF. Here's the plain-language version we give clients at the studio.
## The carcass (the box you don't see)
- **BWR plywood** - boiling water resistant. Our default recommendation for most Hyderabad kitchens. - **BWP plywood** - boiling water proof. Worth it near sink zones and in homes with heavy wet cooking. - **HDHMR** - high-density board with excellent screw-holding. Great value, especially for shutters.
We do not recommend plain MDF or particle board carcasses in kitchens. Ever.
## The shutters (what you see and touch)
- **Laminate** - most durable per rupee, huge design range, easy to repair. Our Essential-tier default. - **Acrylic** - high-gloss, premium look. Show-kitchen favourite, but shows fingerprints. - **PU paint** - seamless, luxurious, any colour you want. Needs a spray booth to do well - which is why we do it in the factory, never on site.
## Hardware is not the place to save
A kitchen opens and closes tens of thousands of times over its life. Soft-close hinges and quality channels cost a small premium upfront and define how the kitchen feels in year five. Every D'leaps kitchen ships with soft-close as standard - and our lifetime warranty covers the woodwork behind it.
## The honest summary
Spend on the carcass and hardware first, then the finish. A laminate kitchen on a BWP carcass will outlive an acrylic kitchen on particle board by a decade.
