A plain-English guide to the boards your interiors are actually made of — where plywood, MDF and HDHMR each belong, and where they fail.
Most of what you pay for in interiors is board — the material behind every shutter, carcass and panel. Getting the board right is the difference between joinery that lasts a decade and joinery that swells in three monsoons. Here is what actually differs.
## Plywood (BWP / BWR / MR)
Plywood is layers of wood veneer glued crosswise, which makes it strong and excellent at holding screws. The grade is about the glue:
- **BWP (boiling-water-proof)** and **BWR (boiling-water-resistant)** handle moisture well — the right choice for kitchen bases and anywhere near water. - **MR (moisture-resistant)** is fine for dry areas but not for wet zones.
Plywood is our default for kitchen carcasses and wardrobe boxes because it survives the humid Hyderabad climate and holds hinges and channels firmly over years of use.
## MDF (medium-density fibreboard)
MDF is fine wood fibres compressed with resin into a smooth, uniform board. Its strength is the flawless surface — ideal for painted finishes, lacquer and routed/moulded shutter designs. Its weakness is water and screw-holding: MDF swells badly if it gets wet and does not grip screws as well as ply. We avoid it for kitchen bases and wet areas, and use it where its smooth face earns its place — decorative panels, painted shutters, lightweight non-structural work.
## HDHMR (high-density high-moisture-resistant board)
HDHMR is a denser, more uniform engineered board designed to combine MDF's smooth machinable surface with better screw-holding and moisture resistance. It routes and paints beautifully and resists water far better than plain MDF, which makes it a strong all-rounder for shutters and many carcass applications. It is heavier and usually costs a little more than standard ply of the same size.
## So which should you use?
- **Kitchen carcass, wet areas:** BWP/BWR plywood, or HDHMR. - **Wardrobe carcass:** BWR plywood. - **Painted or moulded shutters:** MDF or HDHMR for the smooth surface. - **Decorative, non-structural panels:** MDF is fine and economical.
## The honest bit
No single board is "best" — each has a right job. Be wary of anyone who quotes a suspiciously low number without telling you the board grade, or who uses MDF where ply belongs to save cost.
